Doggie classes are boomin

IT was another busy period at the refuge last week, with the emphasis on the new educational programme to raise awareness of the plight of abandoned dogs here inTenerife.
Staff welcomed 80 children from San Miguel’sLutherKingSchoolon the Monday, while a total of 180 schoolkids from Colegio Perez de Valero, in Los Cristianos, poured in on Thursday and Friday.

Accion del Sol staff firmly believe that educating children on animal welfare will improve conditions for the animals – and also improve the minds of the youngsters about the correct way treat their pets.
Although Accion is a five-star refuge, the day-to-day running is definitely a full-time job for the manager, Marion Gonzalez, whose normal day starts at 7am with a walk around the sanctuary to check all is well with the dogs.
That is followed by her daily briefing with the morning staff for any extra tasks which may have cropped up for the day.
Marionis a very hands-on person, who receives incoming dogs and assists the vet and staff to examine and wash the new arrivals.
She also spends time socialising the dogs so they can be kept safely together in pairs or small groups without any trouble.
The legal aspects of running the refuge also take up immense time, with endless trips to the various town halls with whom Accion del Sol collaborate.
Most weeks, the refuge receives large groups of children, for whom time is spent educating the children, and these schedules are all prepared byMarion.
Her list of tasks is endless, butMarionis totally committed to her role at the refuge, which appears to be never-ending.

Germany’s handy for Andi, May 07, 2012

PEOPLE often ask about our Accion del Sol refuge dogs now living inGermanyand, sometimes, we can provide the perfect answer.

For instance, here’s Andi, who went toGermanythree years ago as a little pup, and is obviously happy now and flourishing.

We have also sent Pinsel, the podenco, to a new home inGermany, but there are still about 30 more podencos awaiting new family.

The podencos are of all ages, colours and natures. They make excellent pets, and we urgently need to find them new homes. Please contact us or visit the refuge if you are interested in any of these dogs, or any of the others at the refuge.

Hope never dies for the Accion staff, and only last week they were delighted to see the adoption of a dog who had been in the refuge for six years.

He had been in a very bad way when taken in from another shelter which had been closed down, but had been restored to full health. A Belgian couple had been walking the dog over a period of time and had grown very fond of her.

They decided they couldn’t bear to be parted from her, so she now will end her days knowing just what a loving, caring home is all about.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the refuge the day she left to start her new life, and there are so many other cases which touch the hearts of those working at the refuge.

It’s that time of year again when we organise The Teide Challenge to raise money for Accion del Sol, so if anyone is interested in joining us on the walk to the peak of Mount Teide, then contact 922 778 630 for more information.

The date is yet to be confirmed, but it will be around the end of the month. The last two challenges have been successful and previous participants have all agreed that the views were amazing and, overall, it was a wonderful experience.

Accion el Sol News, May 02, 2012

POTTER and Susi are two of the many abandoned dogs who were brought into the Accion del Sol refuge last week.

Potter is a timid, three-month-old male Canarian Podenco, who needs lots of tlc and good food as he is extremely malnourished.
Susi, a three-year-old Yorkshire terrier, has typical sticking-out Canarian teeth and she’s a little darling.

There was an attempted break-in at the refuge last week, when fences were cut in the hope that some of the rescue dogs would escape.
Luckily, all the dogs preferred the safety and comfort of their first-class refuge. A denuncia was made and the Guardia Civil inspected the damage done by the culprits.
And, needless to say, security has also been increased greatly to protect the dogs from further break-ins.

Deutsch lernen mal anders...

Lebendiger Unterricht für Deutsch-Schüler in Arona: Besuch im Tierheim Acción del Sol.

05.04.2012 - - … immer nur Grammatik und die üblichen Themen der Lehrbücher, das kann langweilig sein, aber wenn das Thema nicht nur interessant, sondern auch lehrreich erscheint, ist die Anwendung von Deutsch doppelt so praktisch! Das denken die Deutschschüler des Kulturzentrums in Los Cristianos, hauptsächlich Erwachsene aus dem Hotelgewerbe, die für ihre Arbeit Deutschkenntnisse brauchen.
Regelmäßig machen sie zusätzlich zu ihrem Deutschunterricht praktische Anwendungen der Sprache. Wenn es um einen Stammtisch geht, einen Spielabend oder einen Film macht es natürlich viel Spaß, aber wenn ein Besuch in einem Tierheim und eine Führung auf Deutsch auf dem Programm steht, geht es nicht nur um Deutschkenntnisse und ihre Anwendung, sondern auch um ein heikles und kompliziertes Thema wie den Tierschutz, zu dem viele noch keinerlei Bezug haben.

Ihr Interesse zeigt aber, dass es ein Thema ist, worüber sie mehr Information haben möchten, und wenn diese auch noch auf Deutsch kommt, dann ist der Effekt doppelt so groß und sitzt besser! Darum kümmert sich besonders gut die Tierheimleiterin von „Acción del Sol“, Marion González, wenn sie ihnen den Unterschied zwischen Tierschutz und Tierquälerei mit allerlei Beispielen erklärt. Gespannt hören alle zu, wenn die Direktorin über angemessene Tierhaltung oder Massenproduktion erzählt, und viele nehmen sogar mit ihren noch eingeschränkten Deutschkenntnissen lebhaft an den anschließenden Diskussionen teil. Marion übt mit ihnen natürlich nicht nur deutsch, sondern sie gibt ihnen auch die gewünschte Information über Tierschutz. Bei jedem Besuch bereitet sie auch Lehrmaterial vor, das die Schüler dann mitnehmen und zu Hause noch einmal durchlesen können, falls sie etwas bei der Erklärung nicht mitbekommen haben. Marion möchte ja sicher gehen, dass ihre Mitteilung richtig ankommt! Diese Art von Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schülern und Tierheim geht aber noch viel weiter, sie besuchen regelmäßig die Hunde, die sich gerade dort befinden und auf Adoption warten und führen sie spazieren, holen sie nicht nur für kurze Zeit aus den Zwingern, sondern üben mit ihnen auch einige Tricks, auf Deutsch natürlich, die den Tieren allemal zugute kommen, verteilen Streicheleinheiten oder spielen mit ihnen, am Ende sprechen alle nur noch auf Deutsch.
Wenn das nicht ein alternativer Unterricht ist, von dem alle etwas haben! Und besonders stolz darauf ist natürlich die Lehrerin, die einfach nur zuschauen darf, wie Schüler und Tiere diese „Zusammenarbeit“ genießen.

Tierleid in Südeuropa „Acción del Sol“ als Schutzort

Tierelend ist vor allem in den südlichen Ländern Europas ein Problem. Durch eine unkontrollierte Vermehrung der Hunde wächst die Population der herrenlosen Hunde kontinuierlich an. Von Hunger und Krankheiten geplagt, finden viele Tiere einen elenden Tod. Als eine der größten Tier- und Artenschutzorganisationen in Deutschland setzt sich der Verein aktion tier –menschen für tiere e.V. auch für den Tierschutz im Ausland ein. Dank der positiven Bereitschaft und Mitarbeit der spanischen Behörden gelang es aktion tier, eines der modernsten Tierheime Europas auf der beliebten Ferieninsel Teneriffa in Spanien zu eröffnen.

Am 21. Juli 2006 konnte nach nur einjähriger Bauphase unter reger Beteiligung von über 300 Gästen und einem hohen Presseaufgebot das aktion tier-Tierheim „Acción de Sol“ unter anderem durch den Ministerpräsidenten der Kanaren, Don Ricardo Melchior, und I.H. Dr. Gabriele Begum Inaara Aga Khan festlich eingeweiht werden. 10 000 m2 Gelände mit eigener Tierarztpraxis stehen den Hunden, die in Gruppenhaltung in weitläufigen Innen- und Außenzwingern leben, zur Verfügung. Durch gezielte Kastrationsaktionen und einer tierärztlichen Betreuung durch aktion tier konnte bei vielen leidenden Hunden auf Teneriffa zum einen die unkontrollierte Vermehrung eingedämmt und ihnen zum anderen ein artgerechtes Leben ermöglicht werden.

Seit Bestehen des Tierheims Hunde medizinisch versorgt wurden bislang knapp tausend Hunde medizinisch versorgt und ca. ein Viertel von ihnen wurde direkt auf der Insel in ein neues Zuhause vermittelt. Marion Köpke de González, Leiterin des Tierheims, die fließend Deutsch und Spanisch spricht, hat seit der Eröffnung Hunderte von Hunden kastrieren und chippen lassen und betreut auch regelmäßig Kinder- und Schulgruppen, die als Besucher auf das Gelände kommen, um mehr rund um das Thema Hund und Tierheim zu lernen. Durch die Unterstützung von Flugpaten sowie durch aktion tier-Kooperationspartner in Deutschland können Hunde auch nach Deutschland in ein liebevolles Zuhause vermittelt werden. Da Tiere nicht allein im Flugzeug reisen dürfen, benötigen sie Menschen, sogenannte Flugpaten, die durch den Einsatz ihres Namens auf dem Passierschein des Tieres diesem die Einreise ermöglichen. Um weitere Vermittlungen auch nach Deutschland möglich zu machen, sucht aktion tier laufend weiterhin Flugpaten.

- Kaufe kein Ei mit der 3.

Auch behinderte Kinder und Jugendliche finden das Projekt Zusammenkunft von Mensch & Tier im Tierheim „Acción del Sol“ hervorragend. Die Therapie „Keine Angst vor Vierbeinern“ schlägt an.
Die Trennung von den Vierbeinern fiel am Ende allen schwer.
